The Berlin International Spirits Competition is the first major international spirits competition with trade-only judges, and this year’s competition featured nearly 400 spirits from more than 20 countries. Spirits are judged blindly by category and price, with medals awarded on a merit basis by a majority vote from the judging panel.

Since its introduction in 2000, the SFWSC has become the most respected and influential spirits competition in the world. Products are evaluated in a blind taste test by a panel of carefully-selected spirits industry experts. Spirits recognized as medal-worthy by SFWSC judges are understood around the world by both trade and consumers to be the best the industry has to offer. With a record-breaking 2,100 entries in this year’s competition, only the highest scores received honors. We are especially proud to announce that David Nicholson Reservewas named 2017’s Best Straight Bourbon.

The Ultimate Spirits Challenge, now in its seventh year, is chaired by Ultimate Beverage Challenge and establishes the platinum standard for beverage evaluation. After a blind tasting, finalist status is determined by the judging chairman. A scoring curve is used based upon the number of entries and overall categorical scoring, while Great Value indicates products with a favorable relationship between their price and final score.
